Tom Tanner, EA, PMP

After my time in the Army, my experience has been owning or helping small businesses. I am experienced in operation, accounting, finance, marketing, strategic planning, facilitating and project management with both for profit and non-profits. I owned several businesses for more than 25 years and over the last 16 years have been a small business advisor. I am an Enrolled Agent (EA) (see below what EA is), Project Management Professional (PMP), Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP) and a Quickbooks Pro-Advisor for Online.

During my free time, if there is any, is being outdoors on the water or underneath (love diving), on the gun range (NRA instructor), or in the garage tinkering with cars.  I am a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and an Army veteran.

What is an EA?

An EA is an Enrolled Agent. You may have never heard of one, but there are currently more than 53,000 practicing in the US, of course this is compared to over 650,000 CPAs. So what is the difference between an Enrolled Agent and a CPA.

An enrolled agent is a federally licensed tax practitioner who has unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS. Enrolled agents are licensed by the IRS where CPAs’ are licensed by the state, therefore an Enrolled Agent can represent anyone in the United States while a CPA can only represent clients in states they are licensed in. CPAs are the only ones that can do audits, and usually provide high level accounting to large business and wealthy individuals. And you guest it, typically CPAs charge much more for their services that an Enrolled Agent.
